New South Wales' exports hit a new record in 2015-16 (up $3.1 billion), according to Australia's Trade by State and Territory 2015-16 released today. International demand was higher for most States and Territories, with export volumes having increased for Tasmania, Queensland, the Australian Capital Territory and South Australia.
In 2015-16, Western Australia continued to be Australia's major exporter, accounting for 35.2 per cent of Australia's total exports (valued at $110 billion), followed by New South Wales (22.8 per cent), Queensland (20.1 per cent) and Victoria (13.7 per cent).
Iron ore and concentrates ($47.2 billion) was Western Australia's major export while coal was the biggest earner for Queensland ($16.6 billion) and New South Wales ($11.5 billion). Education-related travel services ($6.5 billion) were Victoria's main export, while copper ($1.4 billion) from South Australia and zinc ($757 million) from Tasmania were those State's biggest earners.
China was the largest trading partner for all States while Japan was the largest trading partner for the Northern Territory. Switzerland, which imports Australian-made gold coin and legal tender, was the Australian Capital Territory's largest trading partner in 2015-16.
New South Wales was Australia's leading destination for imports, accounting for 40 per cent of Australia's total imports (valued at $139.6 billion), followed by Victoria (26.7 per cent), Queensland (14.4 per cent) and Western Australia (13.5 per cent).
